i was taught to make trees with lofts instead of straight up modeling. mostly because you can use the loft's automatic UV generation very much to your advantage

Not really you could use a free program called roadkill uv.
all you have to do is export your model as an obj, then import it into roadkill,
select the edges were the seam will be located and then import it back to 3ds max.
